Fighting For Human Rights

Guest speakers from Amnesty International – the largest human rights organisation in the world – visited Comet Bay College on Tuesday to inspire students to become warriors for justice.
Youth Advisory Group WA School Outreach Team members Tara and Emma spoke to some of our Year 10 HASS students about the organisation’s broad range of campaigns in Australia and across the globe, fighting for rights for Indigenous groups, refugees, women, the LGBTQIA+ community and more.
Students looked closely at the plight of children detained in poor conditions in watch houses across Australia.
HASS Teacher Tara Holmes said the incursion was a great introduction to her students’ human rights studies.
“It was an inspiring presentation which encouraged students to think outside their circle and community, and to consider the injustices happening every day in the world,” she said.
“We begin our human rights studies this week, with particular focus on Australian human rights, so it was a timely exercise that will hopefully ignite some passion.”
Amnesty International will return next week to address the remainder of the Year 10 cohort.
