Comet Bay College has adopted a range of Indigenous words to rename its Learning Area blocks.
The initiative is part of the College’s commitment to implementing whole-school, culturally-responsive practices.
Students now attend classes in Noorn, Quenda, Pibaab, Yoorn, Djidi Djidi, Mernong and Kaartidijin blocks.
Principal Kelly Bennett said the new signage, installed during the school holidays, would be complemented by colourful murals after a community consultation process was complete.
“The new building names acknowledge the traditional owners of our land, the Whadjuk Noongar people,” Mrs Bennett said.
“First Nations Australians are our country’s original educators, sharing their stories, traditions, customs and connections to their land and people. Comet Bay College is committed to strengthening our relationship with our Indigenous families to further foster our cultural respect and understanding.
“All of our Student Leaders and Aboriginal students got involved in the planning of this new initiative. They researched Aboriginal words that represented flora, fauna, seasons and subjects, and finally chose fauna that is indigenous to our local community.
“I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mary Indich, one of our parents and a local Elder, for her support and advice.”
