Comet Bay College’s Australian Football Specialist Program Year 8/9 Girls have won the Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup in their inaugural year!
The team competed in the top division of the WAFC competition, which includes all private and public schools from across the state, defeating Mater Dei College 20-13 in the grand final at Cockburn ARC on Tuesday afternoon.
The win didn’t come easy with the team going into the half-time break two goals down. The girls rallied in the second half to kick a goal in the opening minutes and from there they continued to pressure the goal front until another goal was scored to put us one point up.
Withholding attacks from a determined Mater Dei side, our third goal was kicked with just two minutes to go, securing the win.
Alira Cooper was awarded Best on Ground, winning the match ball after an impressive game in the ruck and all three of our goals.
Coach Matthew Piggott said the College was extremely proud of the way the girls conducted themselves throughout the competition.
“The girls demonstrated great sportsmanship and humility in all of their games,” he said. “It is a credit to the students and all who teach them. To win such a prestigious competition in our inaugural year is a sign of big things to come for this program and our students.”
College tradition allowed the girls to wear their premiership medals and guernseys to school the following day.
The win comes just weeks after our boys brought home the College’s fourth Eagles Cup, with both cups to be displayed our ever-expanding trophy cabinet.
Well done girls, you’ve made us proud.
