Brain and Eye Dissections

Our Year 12 General Human Biology students got a hands-on look at the brain and eyeball last week when they were invited to dissect both organs.
Associate Dean of Science Laura Ellam said the task enabled students to refer to their theoretical knowledge in a practical experiment.
“We are studying the brain and nervous system and its function, and the brain dissection allowed students to identify the cerebellum, cerebrum, brain stem and corpus callosum,” she said. “Students were able to see the structure of the brain, how delicate the brain tissue is and how easily it can get damaged without the protection of the skull and meninges.
“Piercing through the cow eyeball tissue was challenging for some students, but once the outer layer was broken, they were able to see the viscous liquid leak out of the eyeball. They investigated the use of the lens to magnify and read the newspaper and identified the optic nerve which leads to the brain.”
