Comet Bay College was visited this week by local punk rock group My Shadow and I, who performed an intimate concert to mark R U OK? Day.
Students who had received the highest number of House points in each year group were rewarded with a ticket to the lunchtime concert where the band played original songs as well as a rock cover of the ‘Friends’ theme song ‘I’ll Be There for You.’
The band then performed a half-hour set for our STEP (School to Employment Program) students, as well as Certificate II and III in Music classes.
STEP students created marketing material for the event and the music certificate students assisted in setting up the concert.
Media and STEP teacher Matthew Potts said the band was comprised of musicians who had experienced mental health issues and had used their music as a means of overcoming their obstacles.
“Students were given an opportunity to ask questions about their personal experiences with these struggles, as well as questions relating to the music experience and song writing,” he said.
Comet Bay College nurse Leonie Wilson and chaplain Kelly Nicholls, along with some student helpers, set up an R U OK? Day information stall with material promoting good mental health and wellbeing for all students.
