NAIDOC Celebrations

Tasty, traditional treats were on offer yesterday as Comet Bay College kicked of NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Students were invited to try kangaroo sausages and damper, prepared by students during Home Economic Classes and served by our helpful student leaders.
Indigenous music was streamed across the campus radio during recess and lunch times and many Learning Areas planned their own NAIDOC-related activities, including HASS which examined the war experiences of Indigenous people, studied famous Aboriginal entrepreneurs and researched the effects of migration on First Nation’s persons.
A group of Year 11 School to Employment Program (STEP) students also enjoyed an Aboriginal cultural tour to the WA Museum Boola Bardip. Students were involved in interactive activities to learn about Aboriginal rights and freedoms, as well as traditional uses of the land.
“The visual displays at the museum were awe inspiring,” STEP teacher Theresa Jennings said.
“The Aboriginal night sky map was particularly impressive.
“Students finished the day with a walk through Yagan Square where Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer Lee-Ann Hay explained the Yagan statues’ historical significance.”
