Indigenous Totems for NAIDOC Week 2020

NAIDOC Week 2020 activities kicked off at Comet Bay College with colourful totem painting.
Our Aboriginal Islander Education Officer (AIEO) Lee-Anne Hay has been working closely with our Year 11 School to Employment Program (STEP) students recently to share her knowledge about indigenous symbols and their meanings.
Today STEP teachers Katy Vipond and Theresa Jennings helped the students create their own stories on the totems.
“The totems will become a permanent feature of the College, installed next term when we plant our native gardens,” Ms Jennings said.
“The students put a lot of thought into their totems and it was great to see them utilise the symbols they have been learning to create a visually stimulating and meaning art piece.”
Comet Bay College received a $1000 PALS grant from BHP to help fund the totem project.
