Our Year 12 Physical Education Studies students have enjoyed recreating the atmosphere of big-stage arenas during Fridays’ basketball matches, adding plenty of flair with commentators, grand team entrances and music.
Players stand to attention for a Backstreet Boys’ I Want It That Way anthem before each game, relishing teacher Sam Mainwaring’s love of ‘90s boy bands.
The fun has not distracted students from the seriousness of the competition, with a series tournament between rivals Dunkalicious and Air Ballerz all tied up.
Mr Mainwaring said Dunkalicious won with an exciting buzzer beater on Friday.
“It went down to the wire,” he said. “Air Ballerz captain Luke Taylor hit a go ahead bucket with four seconds to go.
“With the gym hallway at capacity with arriving classes, and to stay alive and take it to a final Game 7, Dunkalicious inbounded the ball to Jacob Palmer who hit an unbelievable leaning corner three-pointer with a hand in the face to win the game. The gym erupted.”
