Education system reforms, assisted dying laws and climate change were just three of the issues which took centre stage when our Year 9 Gifted and Talented Students shared their political platforms last week.
The students, who are studying politics in Humanities and Social Sciences, formed political parties and designed their campaign to present to their peers, who then voted using real booths and ballot papers.
HASS teacher Sara Tyrrell said students had put a lot of thought into their presentations.
“There were some very mature topics discussed, including mental health, homelessness, the environment, housing prices, immigration, Indigenous rights, sexual education and renewable energy,” she said.
“It demonstrated how passionate young people are about their country and their future.”
In true political campaign-style, there were many promises and the occasional sugary bribe.
