Comet Bay College’s innovative Peer Mentoring Program will be introduced next year, and our inaugural mentors recently completed their training.
The pilot initiative will pair eight qualified Year 12 mentors with students in Years 8 and 9 to work together on project-based activities.
The mentors will be using the sessions to contribute to the 50 hours of community service required to complete an endorsed Community Service course.
Dean of Positive Culture Team Kelly Hulin said the new program attracted plenty of interest and the successful mentors completed 11 units of peer mentoring training in preparation for their new role.
“The idea of this program is to give younger students a positive experience at school,” she said. “Our mentors will be matched with students who would really benefit from an older role model. “Together they may work on art projects, school work or enjoy sporting activities, with the hope they gain friendship and guidance from their mentor at a time it is needed most.
“It also encourages our Year 12 mentors to become more active in the school community and stand up to be the leaders they are.”
