Comet Bay College has received a special “thank you” plaque and framed picture from the Commanding Officer of the Submarine HMAS Collins after our delivery of laundry bags last term.
Year 10 Textile students (under the guidance of Teacher Nicole French and Home Ec Assistant Jen Wipou) made the laundry bags and gifted them to a group of submariners who were set to be deployed overseas and would be away from their families at Christmas. These handmade gifts and the sentiment behind them were very much appreciated by the service men and women. Knowing that the wider community appreciates their service and understands the sacrifices they make, makes them proud to wear their Royal Australian Navy uniform.
The students were very lucky to experience a tour onboard an operative submarine and see what living and working conditions the submariners endure during long deployments. Despite the very cramped and sometimes dangerous conditions, they successfully work together as a team and become like an extended family.
Defence School Mentor Claire Hunt described the College’s relationship with HMAS Stirling as invaluable.
She thanked Captain Doug Theobald (Commander of Submarine Force), Commander Robin Dainty (Commanding Officer of the submarine HMAS Collins) and POML-SSM Steven Merritt for their ongoing support.
ABML-CSM Shakelton, LSML-SSM Fitzgerald, ABMEDSM Russel and COB Sanders were also on hand to assist with the submarine tour.
