Three of our Year 9 students presented their innovative plan to improve safety in Rockingham at the regional leg of the Bendigo Community Bank Len Sheedy “How Would You Improve Your Community?” Competition on Tuesday.
Zak Allan, Antaliya Drakulic and Michael Chuka won the right to represent Comet Bay College at the regional contest after their concept for Neon Street Painting won the school’s search for an inspiring community project.
The three teens researched, budgeted and pitched plans to transform dark alleyways, underpasses and dingy streets into colourful street art which glows in the dark.
Their idea brightens dull neighbourhoods and enhances community safety while showcasing local artworks.
About 140 Comet Bay College Year 9 students participated in the competition as part of their HASS (Economics) curriculum.
Zak Allan, Antaliya Drakulic and Michael Chuka won $300 for their submission. They are vying for the $1,000 prize money in the regional leg.
The competition’s winning idea will be snapped up by the City of Rockingham and implemented in 2020.
Academic Excellence Dean Jenny Burton said this year’s contest produced the highest calibre she had ever seen.
“I was very impressed by all the presentations today, and our students certainly did an amazing job,” she said.
“They should be very proud of their idea, research and presentation. Comet Bay College stood tall among some great presentations.”
The regional winner will be announced next week.
We wish them luck!
