Year 8 Gifted and Talented student Iris Sin can call herself an award-winning author after taking out first prize in her age division in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Make Your Own Story Book Competition.
Iris wrote her 5800-word story Over the Bridge in just two weeks.
She said it was a contemporary story about “getting over a grudge” and was written for children aged 8 to 12.
“I really enjoy making my own stories and making my own worlds,” the 14-year-old said.
Iris said she was “shocked” when she heard she had won. She received her prizes, which included merchandise, a $50 book voucher and more, at a presentation ceremony on August 18.
The Make Your Own Story Book Competition is held annually and attracts entries from young people across WA. It includes categories for picture books and storybooks.
Comet Bay College Dean of Teaching and Learning Melissa Webb said the competition challenged students to write concisely, creatively and with a theme in mind.
“Iris wrote an amazing story,” she said.
“She is a very deserving winner.”
Well done, Iris!
