Dark alleyways, underpasses and dingy streets in Rockingham could be brought to life with neon paint if a creative idea from three Comet Bay College students is successful.
Antaliya Drakulic, Zak Allan and Michael Chuka won the College’s Bendigo Bank Len Sheedy How Would You Improve Your Community Competition thanks to their concept, Neon Street Painting.
All Year 9s entered the competition, which encourages students to come up with practical ideas to help improve their community.
Six finalists presented their ideas to a panels of judges today, which included Associate Principal Phil Casas, Academic Excellence Dean Jenny Burton and Gifted and Academic Excellence Associate Dean Colleen Morrison.
Mr Casas said he was impressed by student’s research and creativity.
“It was hard to pick a winner,” he said.
“In the end, Neon Street Painting won because it was deemed to be a great, new innovation combining street art, lighting and safety in our community.”
Other ideas included obstacle course and games painted on sidewalks, stories from the elderly told through public youth artwork, school students interacting with residents within nursing homes, a new nature playground and beach access for wheelchairs.
“It was great to see such diversity,” Mr Casas said.
“It was lovely there were two intergenerational ideas – bringing young people and the elderly together. I’m always for young people supporting their elders…and it’s a two-way street. The elderly have a wealth of stories and knowledge to impart.”
Antaliya Drakulic, Zak Allan and Michael Chuka will present their idea at the competition state finals later this year.
We wish them luck!
