Defence Transition Mentor Claire Hunt coordinated a Christmas Care Package project with the help of the HASS staff and students.
Students donated food items and small gifts which were boxed into Christmas Care Packages for deployed soldiers from 13th Brigade, who are overseas on a six month deployment over the Christmas period. The students also wrote letters of support and gratitude to thank them for their service.
Through their generous contributions 33 boxes filled will an assortment of food treats, magazines, toiletries and novelty items were delivered to the 11/28th Battalion at Irwin Barracks. Commanding Officer LTCOL Robert Colligan has arranged for them to be delivered to his team placed in Afghanistan and also those currently operating out of Darwin on Border Protection duties.
The project gave students a better understanding that military servicemen and women and their families contribute to operational effectiveness. Being away from family during important moments like Christmas and birthdays is a part of the military lifestyle. But we encourage our students to recognise that our Defence students and their families sacrifice a lot on behalf of all Australians and we should acknowledge that commitment and be thankful.
