Tourism Studies

Our Year 11 ATAR and General Geography classes united for an ecotourism excursion in Mandurah last week.
Students enjoyed a one-and-a-half-hour cruise on the estuary and canals and were excited to spy dolphins and osprey. Representatives from Mandurah Cruises and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions were on hand to chat about the changes in tourism and the River Guardian program.
Students examined the role of telecommunications in tourism using the Marine Fauna Sightings app, smart phones and social media, and were able to evaluate the impacts of ecotourism in Mandurah.
A Visit Mandurah spokesperson shared how the use of technology had increased participation in tourism through VR, touch screens and social media, and the importance of accessible tourism – a growing market sector worth $8 billion.
Ways to Nature also lead the group on a guided tour around Samphire Cove to demonstrate the impacts of ecotourism.
