Sustainable Living

Our Year 10 students have been putting what they have learned about sustainability into practise this week, designing and building eco-friendly homes.
The project is part of their Geography studies and encouraged students to consider measures to improve their carbon footprint.
Teacher Sofwaana Abdul Jamil said the models were built using mostly recycled materials and she was pleased to see the range of sustainable features students had incorporated into their designs, including solar panels, water tanks, chook pens, vegetable patches, ride sharing facilities and more.
“Students sourced a lot of their material from our recycle bins and collected dropped leaves and twigs from the ground for their models,” she said. “They have transformed aluminium cans into windmills and used old denim for housing insulation.
“We have been learning about living off the grid, creating our own energy sources and the benefits of tiny homes. I hope students reflect on their lifestyles and consider how they can implement sustainable practises into their way of life.”
