Money More Than A Game

Budgeting, investing, trading and understanding fixed term deposits and credit cards are some of the practical life skills our Year 9 HASS students are learning in Economics.
They have been using the interactive ESSI Money Game to apply for jobs to earn income, learn how to budget and manage expenses such as rent, food, bills and purchasing goods and services. Through the game they must create bank accounts for both everyday transactions and savings, considering the fees charged and interest earned. Students also have the option of investing through fixed term deposits or signing up for a credit card, again considering the fees and interest payable.
Teacher Emilie Ingate said the game introduced real-world obstacles, such as scam emails and texts that students needed to navigate to protect their finances.
“Each week in the game students can read helpful finance articles and complete quizzes to demonstrate understanding of their knowledge to earn extra cash to increase their net worth,” she said.
“As students begin their career journeys and begin to apply for jobs, this resource will be a valuable teaching tool to help them along the way.”
