McGhee Races To World Number 2!

Year 9 student Declan McGhee has been crowned World Number 2 20-inch BMX rider, after an outstanding performance at the 2022 UCI BMX World Championships this week.
Declan (14) represented Australia on the world stage in Nantes, France, in two divisions, also coming home with a World Number 3 ranking in the cruiser category.
He said he was excited when he heard his results.
“Other people expected me to do well, but I didn’t go in with any expectations,” he said.
“I found the track quite easy. It was built the week before the contest and destroyed days later because it was made in a carpark.”
It was the second time Declan has travelled aboard to represent Australia in BMX racing, after competing in Belgium in 2019.
He was on a team of 150 Aussie competitors at this year’s event, with his mum and dad accompanying him on the journey.
Declan, who has been riding for about nine years, said his two favourite moments were lining up at the gates at the start of each race and walking onto the podium.
“I like it when the cameras get in your face at the gates,” he said. “It pumped me up.”
Well done, Declan!
