Inquiry Based Learning Fosters Critical Thinking

Comet Bay College has introduced Inquiry Based Learning in English this year and students have enthusiastically embraced the creative learning model.
Inquiry Based Learning encourages students to employ 21st century skills, such as critical thinking and innovation, to research solutions in response to a prompt.
Our Year 7 students were recently asked to find creative solutions to one of three prompts: plastic is harming our oceans, make life better in your community or bees are at threat. They were required to research their idea and create a presentation with a visual aspect, highlighting their solution and how it would work. Their work included posters, pamphlets, product models and even a computer game.
English teachers Erin Caizley and Suzy Wiseman said the students loved being able to put their creative thinking hats on and have ownership over their ideas.
“Students loved the research stage, using laptops to research their idea, what had been trialled before and what made their own idea unique and viable,” Miss Caizley said.
“Seeing students present their unique ideas in front of the class was wonderful. They all looked so proud of what they had created and it was great to see them eager to share this with their peers.”
