Art Speaks to Our Students

A recent trip to Perth helped our Year 9 Gifted and Talented students learn more about how artists express their voice through their work.
The excursion was part of their English Inquiry-Based Project which focussed on how artists produce pieces that reflects different types of marginalisation and provide a voice for contemporary issues.
English teacher Shannen Precious said the day started with a walking Urban Art Tour which lead students through Northbridge, Yagan Square and parts of the bustling inner city. “Students were shown sculptures made by Indigenous artist, wall murals and even some underground art,” she said.
“Students were then taken to the Art Gallery of WA, where they viewed some Pulse Perspectives created recent high school graduates and to Perth Institution of Contemporary Arts where they saw the exhibition of Hatched.
“Students said they enjoyed the excursion, and enjoyed learning about how different types of art produce a voice and an identity. I think their favourite part was being allowed to climb on different sculptures and learning that the artist created the sculptures in a way so they could be interactive.”
Upon their return, students were asked to produce their own piece of marginalised art, with some incredible results!
