Having A Blast In Science!

Our Year 9 students discovered a fun way to test their knowledge of compounds and elements, in the form of the popular ‘pop test’.
Students donned safety gear to mix magnesium and hydrochloric acid in test tubes before collecting the gas produced by the combination in another tube. A lit taper allowed students test the gas, with the ‘pop’ indicating hydrogen.
Education Assistant Kellie Harold demonstrated what happened when larger amounts of hydrogen were exposed to a flame, thanks to the balloon experiment, which students watched from a safe distance.
