Year 8 students learn about coastline sustainability

We are fortunate at Comet Bay College to have an Auditorium that can seat up to 3 classes and this allowed us to invite Natalie Elliot, Coordinator Sustainability and Environment and Rory Garven, Environmental Planning Officer from the City of Rockingham to visit the College to talk to all our Year 8 students over the course of the day.

The Year 8 Students are currently learning about the processes which shape the coast, including wind and waves, and will be undertaking a field trip to Secret Harbour beach during Week 6 to complete some geographical fieldwork  on the topic.

The focus of Natalie and Rory’s  presentation was how the Council manages the 37 kms of varied and dynamic Coastline that are part of Rockingham City. We are very lucky to live on an area of Coastline that offers such a variety of interesting coastal landforms. The information presented gave the students some insight into the work of the Environmental Planners and Coastal Engineers, a growth job area for the future, and how these professionals assist the council in managing coastal erosion and deposition.

We want students to understand there is a need to balance the forces of nature and the needs of people.  It is important to safely and sustainably use, manage and protect the coastline for the leisure, recreation and economic purposes of our Community now and in the future.
