The Student Support team consists of dedicated staff members, with extensive knowledge and experience in a range of pastoral care contexts. These include behaviour development, mental health, physical health and social/emotional development. Student Support staff work collegially in developing;
- a safe, engaging and inclusive college environment
- the capacity of students to promote their own wellbeing and academic progress
- a culture at the college where all members support and encourage each other to “be their best”
The Student Support team coordinates the monitoring and provision of support to students identified as at risk. Staff liaise with parents, staff and external agencies in developing support and management plans for students or identified cohorts.
Dean of Student Support
The Dean oversees the functioning of Student Support and coordinates the development, implementation and review of related process and policy. This includes the line management of Student Support staff in facilitating the development of a positive and inclusive learning environment at Comet Bay College.
The Dean is also responsible for strategic planning and resource allocation in ensuring that both the Business and Learning Area plan targets are met.
Associate Deans manage the behaviour and attendance of their year group, in addition to providing pastoral care to improve the engagement and wellbeing of each cohort.
They work collaboratively with the Support Staff and Learning Area Deans to coordinate the provision of services for identified students.
Their responsibilities include but are not limited to –
- liaising with parents, support staff, and external agencies
- facilitating mental and emotional health support for students
- supporting teachers with strategies for managing student behaviour and engagement
- facilitating support plans for students at educational risk
- assisting in the creation of documented plans to support students with identified needs
- implementing policies to improve outcomes for all students
- monitoring the attendance and behaviour of students
- implementing educationally appropriate responses to high level behaviour issues
- implementing procedures to promote attendance
School Health Services are an easy access point to health care for students. The Nurse may carry out health assessments and provide information, advice, referrals and support for students.
The support encourages development of knowledge, skills and behaviour, and encourages the young person to deal with their health issues and make healthy lifestyle choices.
Individual students can seek information guidance and support about a range of issues that may include: coping with illness, culture or racism issues, feeling anxious, stressed or unhappy, healthy eating and nutrition, healthy weight and body image, mental health and wellbeing, loss and grief, problems at homes, relationships, sexual health, smoking, alcohol and drug use, other adolescent health concerns.
Facilitate the first aid process within the school, carry out psycho-social assessments on students as required, run various groups, provide open clinics at recess and lunchtime, support parents and families through various medical issues to enable students to be safe at school and at home, assist in emergencies and provide short term interventions, referral as identified and counselling around sexual health, drugs and alcohol, mental health and other identified health issues.
Our school nurses also conduct education sessions in the classroom around health issues and run various groups
School Psychology Service
School psychologists are uniquely qualified members of school teams that support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach. School psychologists apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behaviour, to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviourally, and emotionally.
What Do School Psychologists Do?
The school psychologist helps CBC staff meet the social, emotional, learning and behaviour needs of students. The school psychologist works closely with the Student Support, administration, teachers, students and parents to help CBC make improvements that are good for all students, particular groups of students or individual students.

The School Psychologist at Comet Bay College is Olwyn Maddock. Students can make an appointment by visiting the Student Support Office or make a request by email.
Olwyn is available 5 days a week
Eleanor Clayson and Lisa Wells are the Chaplains for Comet Bay College.
They are employed by YouthCARE, whose three core values of respect, compassion and service shape the actions and impact students and the wellbeing of WA school communities.
The role of the Chaplain is to focus on positive, empowering work and programs such as Rainbows, Grief & Loss and Brave as well as mentoring. The School Chaplains work with the student services team to meet the school’s educational objectives and support the students in the challenges that they face throughout their high school years.
The Chaplains are available to provide positive support, life skills and leadership to the students and their families as well as the staff at Comet Bay College. The aim is to create and support a positive school culture through pastoral care and involvement in school initiatives.
Youth Development Officer
Our Youth Development Officer, David Karcheski is responsible for some of the programs that run in our College including Impact, RISK and the Student Leadership Team. He also provides a confidential Counselling service for young people and their families.
David started working as a youth worker for the National Youth Council in the UK before working for local councils in London. He also served as a School Governor and wrote some curriculum material still in use in schools.
Since coming to Australia he has worked with young people in schools and community organisations and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to his post.

Defence Transition Mentor
Comet Bay College is aware of the unique educational needs of students whose parents work within the Australian Defence Force due in part to their mobile lifestyle and long absences of a parent due to deployment and training. As a result, funding has been secured through the Defence Community Organisation for the implementation of the Defence Transition Mentor Program.
The role of the Defence Transition Mentor at the College is designed to provide support and assistance to the student and to hopefully alleviate some of the concerns that families may incur when transferring to a new school. Brochures are available which give further details about the role.

Aboriginal & Islander Education Officer
Working as an AIEO for the past few years at Comet Bay College, Lee-Anne Hay is committed to focusing on improving the educational achievements and outcomes for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and providing support for families and teachers.
Collaborating and working in partnership with the teachers and school community to incorporate culturally inclusive learning programs.
Vivo Rewards Coordinator
The Vivo Coordinator is David Karcheski
Vivos are awarded for meeting specific targets, which are linked to the five school rules:
∙ Follow the instructions of all staff;
∙ Follow all college procedures;
∙ Be courteous and respectful to others;
∙ Keep the college environment clean; and
∙ Do your best and encourage others.
Vivos will also be awarded for attendance, community service activities and sporting events. Every student has an account which monitors their points and can be checked by logging on to their account through the vivomiles.com website or the Vivo App (for Android and iPhones).
Once logged in, students can cash in their Vivos for rewards which are provided through the on-line Vivo shop. Vivos collected will also provide ‘tickets’ to scheduled events throughout the year such as Inter-house carnivals, sausage sizzles, raffles and more. Parents can also track progress with a parent account so that they can see how Vivos are being earned and spent.
The role of the Attendance Officer includes:-
- Monitoring attendance of students
- Identifying continuous unidentified attendance and notify parents
- Sending letters to parents for unexplained absentees
- Liaising with the VIVO Coordinator in rewarding students with consistently high attendance
- Developing a database of student absentee factors
- Identifying and notifying Associate Deans of students requiring Case Management
